Privacy
Fade to Color has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. You never give us your name, email or phone number to use it. This page says exactly what the app keeps on your phone, what it sends to us, and why. It covers the Fade to Color app for iPhone, iPad and Android, and this website.
The short version
- What you save, your moments, your lists and your settings stay on your phone.
- The app sends us a few things with no name attached: which films are saved (for the Audience favorites list), daily counts of what is used in the app, and, if you join a group, the name you choose and your Take Five scores.
- We don’t sell or share data with advertisers or data brokers, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
On your phone
Your saved films, moments and notes, your own lists, your Guess results and streaks, and your settings are kept on your phone and never sent to us, except as described below. Deleting the app deletes them.
A random install number. The first time the app runs it makes a random number for this install. It isn’t tied to you, your device or any account. The app sends it with its requests so we can stop any one install from overloading the service, and so the counts below aren’t counted twice. We only ever store a scrambled form of it (a one-way hash).
Reminders. If you turn on the daily Take Five reminder, it is scheduled by your phone. No server sends it, and nothing about it reaches us.
Screenshots. When you take a screenshot in the app, it may offer to make the film a wallpaper. The app only notices that a screenshot was taken; it never sees or sends the image.
What the app sends us
Films and colors
The app downloads each film’s colors, the film list and the day’s Take Five from our server. These requests carry the install number above and, as with any connection, your internet address. We use them only to answer the request and to limit how often one install or address can ask. We don’t keep a log of them.
Proof it’s the real app (iPhone and iPad)
On iPhone and iPad the app uses Apple’s App Attest to show our server that it is the genuine Fade to Color app, so others can’t copy the film colors. The first time, your phone makes a key that never leaves it, and Apple vouches for it; after that, about once a day, the app signs a challenge from our server with it. We keep the key’s public half and when it was last used, with nothing about you or your device, and delete it after about 13 months without use.
Saved films, counted
When you save or unsave a film, the app tells us which film, with the hashed install number, so we can count how many people have saved each film. That count is the Audience favorites list. We can’t tell who saved what.
Usage counts
Once in a while the app sends a short summary of the day: for example, how many films you browsed, which shape you browse in, which list you are in, whether you played Take Five and how many you named, which links you tapped, and which settings are on. It also says whether it is an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, the app’s version, and the day it was first opened. It never includes what you type, such as searches, list names or notes. We use these counts only to see what people use and make the app better. They are stored with the hashed install number and deleted after about 13 months.
Groups
Groups are optional. When you start or join one, we keep the name you choose to show your friends, a random player number with a secret only your phone knows (we keep only a hash of the secret), the groups you are in, and your scores: each finished Take Five (how many you named and in what order, never which films), your streak and your best Marathon run. Everyone in your groups can see your name and scores there. You can leave a group at any time, and Guess › Groups › Delete my name and scores deletes all of it from our server at once. A group nobody is in any more is deleted.
Shared lists
A list you share travels inside the link itself: its name and its films. We don’t store it.
Links to other services
A film’s page can link to Apple TV, Apple Music and Google Play. If you follow one, that service’s own privacy policy applies. Some of these links carry our affiliate code, so we may earn a commission if you rent, buy or subscribe there. The code identifies us, not you.
Who handles the data
Our server runs on Cloudflare, which stores the data above for us and handles the connection between your phone and our server. We don’t use any other analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services. The app is distributed by Apple and Google, whose stores may collect their own data under their own policies, such as download and crash statistics.
Children
Fade to Color isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. Groups ask only for a display name, which doesn’t need to be a real name.
Your choices
- Delete your group name and scores in the app (Guess › Groups), or leave any group.
- Turn the reminder off in Settings.
- Delete the app: everything on your phone goes, and the install number with it, so nothing we hold can be linked to that install again.
Because we never know who you are, we can’t look your data up by name or email. If you have a question or a request about your data, write to us and we’ll help as far as we can.
Changes
If what the app collects changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top before the change reaches the app.
